I've got a question about a loud slapping noise (that's been getting progressively worse) coming from the engine of my 96 Vulcan 800 A. When it first started it was just a brief intermittent clacking noise that happened after a quick roll-off of the throttle (when pulling in the clutch to switch gears.)3. Generally there is a switch that expands and contracts with heat, thus making the necessary "contact" allowing fan to operate. 4. Inspect for any leakage around fan. 5. Once it has over 30-40k miles, it may need cam chain tensioner extenders, but that's an easy fix. I don't know how much you know about working on vehicles, but diagnose and determine an issue, don't just throw parts at it hoping to solve the problem. Possible causes of your issue: Throttle sensor. Fuel pump or blocked fuel filter. Ignition coil (s) or igniter. The last would be to check the voltage on the regulator. Connect DC meter to Black/Yellow and White wires on the regulator connector. Idle should be 12v. At 6 - 8k rpm you should have 14-15volts. Anything else with a good read on the stator means the regulator is bad. 1995 VN800A.5.0. This is a great starter bike for any average height man. This is a smooth looking, and riding bike. I have been riding my 2003 Drifter since December 2004. It had only 600 miles on it. Nothing is easier to diagnose than charging system issues, at least at first. Get your multimeter out, set it to DC Volts. Fire the bike up and see what the voltage is at idle and at 2500 RPM's.
